Simpson in fresh appeal to Gardiner

UPPER Bann MP David Simpson has again appealed to the UUP's Sam Gardiner to spell out where he stands on the principle of maximising unionist co-operation at the next Assembly election in order to ensure that four unionist MLAs are returned to Stormont.

Stating that unionists of all shades deserve to know how to prioritise their transfers David Simpson said: “A couple of weeks ago I issued a press release commending George Savage MLA for adopting a similar positive approach to the DUP in Upper Bann towards greater unionist co-operation at future elections.

"Our position is well known and has been consistent – unionists should seek to maximise the number of unionist MLAs returned to the Assembly and should also seek to maximise unionist strength at all levels. I welcomed the fact that George Savage is now saying the same thing.

“I pointed out that in Upper Bann we were now clear that the DUP as a whole supports this degree of co-operation and that one of the two sitting UUP MLAs likewise supports it, but that this left us with one vital missing ingredient – namely where the other UUP MLA – Sam Gardiner – stands on the issue.

“It is disappointing that to date Sam has chosen to remain silent on this important issue. I would appeal to Sammy to make his position on the matter clear.
