Sinn Fein welcome RTE and TG4 digital switchover

Sinn Féin Councillor Cathal McLaughlin has welcomed the confirmation by both the Irish and British governments that RTÉ and TG4, the Irish Language television channel, will be made available in Northern Ireland, following the upcoming digital switchover in October.

The switchover will mean an end to the old analogue broadcasting system, with digital television taking its place on October 24th.

Cllr McLaughlin commented: “Sinn Féin has been lobbying for some time to ensure that the Irish and British governments live up to their Good Friday Agreement commitments, and the Memorandum of Understanding already in place regarding the provision of RTÉ and TG4 in the north.”

He continued: “I am happy to acknowledge that both governments have now officially confirmed that RTÉ and TG4 will be provided on Freeview for citizens in the 6 counties.”

Cllr McLaughlin concluded: “The Digital Switchover Help Scheme is now available providing advice and in some circumstances financial assistance, for those who may need to adapt their current TV services. I would encourage anyone with any queries to feel free to contact our constituency office on 02827657198, or visit www.helpscheme.co.uk.”
