Site for new MUGA in Mourneview is revealed

At Monday night’s council meeting, during confidential business, the long-awaited project was given the go-ahead.

The MUGA looks set to be located within the grounds of Dickson Primary School and will be open to the public after school hours.

The money will be made available by the Department of Social Development’s Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and the project completion date is expected to be as early as March.

Speaking on the issue Alderman Stephen Moutray MLA said: “This is a great win for the people of Mourneview. We have lobbied extremely hard in relation to this issue and are delighted that the MUGA will be on site and ready for use by March 2013.

“Mourneview and Grey Estate for too long have been a forgotten and we are proud to have played a key role in the delivery of this fantastic project. The games area can be used by the children and young people of the area to play football, basketball, hockey, netball and many other sports.”

Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Carla Lockhart added: “Green space and play provision in Mourneview is at a premium and for too long the young people and children have not had anywhere to simply do what young people do and that is play sport. This will provide an ideal location for such and given that it is within the compound of Dickson School it will be a safe and well-maintained facility.”

She continued: “We would pay tribute to the DSD department, Council, SELB, the Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership and the Mourneview and Grey Residents Association for all their hard work in bringing this project to fruition. This demonstrates that a joined-up approach really does deliver for the people.

“We look forward to seeing this facility put to good use within the area.

“This project coupled with that of the upgrade of the play area really will create a transformational change and one that can be enjoyed by the many children and young people of the area.”
