Six Mid Ulster villages in line for £200k improvements

Six of Mid Ulster's 44 villages are to have £200k spent on infrastructure improvements in a bid to improve basic services in rural communities.

The lucky six that have been earmarked by the council were chosen based on selection criteria that included levels of deprivation as well as the impact any improvements could have.

Run in conjunction with DARD, the council’s plan could see Maghera & Glen, Fivemiletown, Pomeroy, Ballygawley, Ardboe and Upperlands all get a face lift.

The other 38 villages in Mid Ulster will also be able to apply for between £30-£50k of funding of improvement works in those areas.

But Bellaghy has purposely been left out of the list as money is being spent on it in the run up to the opening of the New Seamus Heaney Centre, Homeplace.

Despite some concern over the way the villages were chosen, councillors at last night’s Development Committee meeting approved the plan - which will now go before the full council.

Deputy chair Barry Monteith raised concerns over villages such as Killyman, which have been left out of the scheme because they don’t have a high enough population.
