Six of the best for Colin

A 20-year-old footballer from Carrickfergus scored six goals for the Ulster Polytech side in their Collingwood Cup tournament triumph in February 1980.

Colin Gilchrist, who had been on the books at Larne for two and a half years, had been unable to break into the first 11 at Inver Park.

Despite not being able to make a breakthrough at Larne, he had been putting in impressive performances at Islandmagee. So far that season he had scored 21 goals for the Ulster Polytech side and Islandmagee.

Even though he was in fine form in front of goal, he was pipped at the post for the ‘player of the tournament award’.

Colin was selected for the Irish Universities squad in their international ties against England, Scotland and Wales.
