Sixth formers experience life at Cambridge Uni

A GROUP of lower sixth formers - including Stephen Hogg of Foyle and Londonderry College - were in Cambridge last week to sample student life at one of the country's top universities.

The 38 students spent three days at Corpus Christi College, one of Cambridge’s oldest colleges. They attended mini-lectures to give them a taste of university-level teaching and had the chance to meet current Cambridge students. They were also able to explore the town.

“Cambridge would be a really nice place to study and live,” said Stephen Hogg, a pupil at Foyle and Londonderry College. “I’m hoping to study medicine and I like the Cambridge medical course as it gives you a broad scientific base.”

Clare Williamson, who goes to Our Lady’s Grammar School, Newry, said she had fallen in love with Cambridge and could picture herself cycling to lectures on a bike with a wicker basket.

“I want to study history because it’s such a diverse topic - and understanding the past helps you understand the present. Cambridge offers one of the best courses,” she said.

Corpus Christi College is linked to Northern Ireland through Cambridge University’s area links scheme, part of a programme to encourage more state school applicants to the university.
