SLIDE SHOW: Whale removed from Portstewart strand

A 35 foot whale washed up on Portstewart strand on Monday morning, has been removed.
McAuley Multimedia 5th Oct 2015...The whale is removed from Portstewart on Monday night after a major removal operation swung into place.Ivan Lynn contracts from Glenshesk Road in Armoy carried out a joint operation with Gareth McCormick from McCormick Contracts Ballyvoy Ballycastle and Seamus Black Livestock Contractor from Glenshesk Road in Ballycastle joined forces with a number of diggers and machinery and sucessfully removed the 35 ft Whale from the beach which they estimated to weigh about 15 tonne. The evening despite poor weather was very popular with visitors who came to Portstewart in the hope of getting a view of the whale before it was moved to its eternal home. A number of diggers and machinery was used to sucessfully remove the whale on Monday evening.

Experts csaid that the animal weighed in the region of 15 tonne.

Today, the NI Environment Agency said that an investigation would be carried out to determine how the whale died.
