Slow down to 20mph urges Craig

There’s been a call for the Roads Service to introduce 20mph zones in Lisburn.

Speaking at a meeting of Lisburn City Council’s Planning Committee this week, which was attended by representatives from Roads Service,

Councillor Yvonne Craig said the introduction of 20mph zones in residential areas would be “a cheap traffic calming measure” that would help to reduce the number of traffic collisions.

A Roads Service spokesperson said: “There have been pilot schemes in other areas which do not have traffic calming measures like speed ramps and therefore we will examine the results of these pilot schemes and decide of their value and consider the next step.”

Mrs Craig said she would continue to campaign for the introduction of 20mph zones in the city.

She said, “I hope that the ‘20s Plenty’ campaign will be considered to be a viable way to reduce injuries and death of especially children in residential areas.

“If we can do anything to reduce death on the roads we should do it. I will continue to campaign for this in my capacity as a councillor.”

Road safety charity Brake has also been calling on drivers to slow down to 20mph, with research showing that the reduction in speed from 30mph to 20mph can halve stopping distances.
