‘Slow down to save squirrels’

AN APPEAL has been made for motorists to slow down in the Glens to prevent the death of red squirrels.

On Thursday January 26, Joe Dowdall of the Glens Red Squirrel Group, said five squirrels were killed on roads in the area within two days.

The Glens Red Squirrel Group has issued an urgent appeal to drivers in the Glens to slow down and take care.

Joe Dowdall said: “Not only are Red Squirrels at risk in Glenariff, there are a lot of walkers who use the road to access the forest park and they are also in danger from people driving too fast. In other parts of country there is huge concern over Squirrel Pox and Grey Squirrels but in the Glens of Antrim the real killers of Red Squirrels are drivers.”
