Slow progress on enterprise zone at university

Progress on Northern Ireland’s first ever enterprise zone, which will be located at the University of Ulster Campus in Coleraine, is slow, but it has the potential to bring much needed investment and jobs to the area, according to DUP MP Gregory Campbell.

Mr Campbell and a delegation of DUP MLAs met with DETI Minister Arlene Foster recently for an update on the project.

Back in March, Chancellor George Osborne made the annoucement about the zone. The company behind it, Five Nines will be pumping around £20m in to the project. The idea behind the enterprise zone is to allow companies to utilise the site, and bring jobs to the Coleraine area. The project will also make use of ‘Project Kelvin’, the superfast transatlantic connection.

Speaking to The Times last week, Mr Campbell said: “I have been working with the First Minister Peter Robinson, DETI Minister Arlene Foster, Coleraine Borough Council and Five Nines to progress this development.

“I sought a meeting between the University of Ulster, Coleraine Borough Council and Minister Foster in the past few weeks, this meeting was held and further progress was made during those discussions. Whilst the parties continue to resolve a number of issues, it would not be appropriate to make any further comment at this stage, but I am hopeful that these discussions will be brought to a conclusion in the very near future.”
