Smoke alarm plea after kitchen fire

The accidental ignition fire began in the kitchen of the terrace house shortly after 7pm.

A 37 year old woman who lived next door to the property suffered slight smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene by Ambulance personnel.

Two appliances from Lisburn Fire Station were used and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus dealt with the blaze.

Following the fire personnel from the Fire and Rescue Service fitted smoke alarms to the homes that were affected.

Temporary Lisburn District Commander Geoff Somerville said that smoke alarms should be fitted in all floors in your house.

“This incident highlights the importance of having a working smoke alarm in your home,” he said. “Smoke alarms alert you to the earliest stage of a fire and give you vital time to escape.

“Fit a smoke alarm on every floor of your home, in hallways or landings and test them every week to make sure they are working.

“More fires start in the kitchen than in any other room in the house so never leave cooking unattended and keep electrical leads and items that can easily catch fire – tea towels, oven gloves etc – away from the cooker and toaster”.
