Snooker initiative

AN initiative to get kids off the streets and onto snooker tables has been launched in the borough.

The Paul Hunter Foundation is being championed by Lurgan snooker ref Len Ganley, who is one of the national coaches who’ll be mentoring those taking part.

Drumgor Snooker Club and Middle Pocket are also on board.

The foundation was established in 2006 in memory of Paul Hunter with the specific aim of giving disadvantaged and disabled youngsters an opportunity to play snooker.

Len said: “Its main aim is to get kids off the streets. To stop them from gambling, drinking, etc. The young people who drop in to these clubs will be giving top level coaching. Who knows where it can lead. Look at Mark Allen.”

Northern Ireland snooker star Mark is another of the national coaches who are on board for the Paul Hunter Trust. The Antrim man’s career was kickstarted by National Lottery funding.

Other coaches include Joe Swail, Patrick Walsh and Bill Telford.

Any local clubs interested in getting involved should contact Len on 07778 542 147.

“We’re hoping that as many local clubs as possible will come on board,” said Len.
