And the news that the old St. Mary’s Primary site at Larne Road will be used to develop some 74 dwellings has been given a warm welcome at Ballymena Borough Council.

Despite two letters of objection, approval was granted by planners for Trinity Housing Association to proceed with the scheme which was also ratified by Ballymena Borough Council. The proposals entails the development of 74 dwellings - 26 semi-detached, 26 terrace and 22 apartments in three blocks with associated access, car parking and site works.

Ballymena South councillors, Beth Adger and Martin Clarke were particularly pleased to see the application being granted.

Cllr. Adger said: “This is a much needed housing boost for this part of the town. It will bring a lot of people into the area which is good news for shops and schools.”

Alderman Clarke said the development would be built to high specifications over a two year period: “I understand that the work will create or sustain up to 50 jobs,” he said.
