Social media page details movements of ‘sex offender’

POLICE are monitoring a Facebook page set up after an alleged sex offender was spotted in Craigavon.

The page is called ‘Keep the children safe in Craigavon’ and was set up on Friday.

Shortly after the page was established police posted a comment to say some of the information posted was incorrect.

Several posts on the page have been deleted, including some from the alleged sex offender himself.

The page is nearing 1,000 ‘likes’, many of them parents, who have made comments in support of the establishment of such a page to keep people informed of the alleged paedophile’s movements.

Details of a man’s car and address were posted on the page though it later transpired these had no link to the alleged sex offender. The remarks have since been taken down with the police encouraging people not to take matters into their own hands.

This is the post the PSNI made on the page: “The Police Service of Northern Ireland are aware of and are monitoring interaction on this page. Some of the information posted here is factually incorrect.

“Whilst we understand and appreciate the concerns, please do not take matters into your own hands.”

Police said if people have any general concerns around how sex offenders are managed they should contact their local police station or neighbourhood officer on 0845 600 8000.
