Solar bins on the way

LARNE is set to be the first council area in Northern Ireland to pilot a number of new cost-saving smart bins in a bid to clean up the borough's famed tourist attractions.

The smart bins, powered by solar energy cells, are designed to send a signal to the team at the waste management depot as soon as they are nearing full capacity - allowing the bins to be emptied as swiftly as possible.

And the bins, which have been dubbed Big Bellies, are also capable of compacting the waste, allowing for five times the capacity of a normal litter bin.
