Soldier will not be named on Memorial

A REQUEST for a deceased soldier's name to be added to Ballycastle War Memorial has been ruled out after the Royal British Legion told Moyle Council he did not die during war service.

Back in August Moyle Council received a request for the name of a man who had served in World War Two to be added to the Memorial.

And the Council agreed the name would be added subject to ratification from the Legion.

But now the Legion’s Ballycastle branch has contacted the Council and stated that whilst the man did have four engagements in uniform, including between 1941 and 1946, he did not die in war service.

The Legion told the Council: ‘We therefore consider his name should not be included on the Quay Road War Memorial, the understanding we have is that only those personnel killed in War Service are inscribed thereon’.
