Something different but local

THE City’s latest iconic image, the Peace Bridge, is proving very popular as a light-weight gift for those sending gifts overseas.

While Christmas might not be far away, for many families there will be a loved one among them who is, and one local shop owner has found a scenic print of the new bridge has been flying off the shelves.

“Frequently, the festive season is referred to as ‘a time for family’ but I thought that there might be some families sitting down to open presents or enjoy their dinner with a loved one overseas, unable to make it home,” said Valerie Moore of Home Sweet Home on Irish Street.

It was with that in mind earlier in the year that Valerie bought in a number of ‘Londonderry-themed’ seasonal greeting cards with a readily identifiable images offering a little reminder of the city especially for the season of goodwill, never thinking they would prove so popular.

Specifically designed to give a flavour of ‘home’ the greeting cards featuring the city and a print of the new Peace Bridge have found great favour with visitors to Home Sweet Home, and have been selling like hot cakes.

“Among the images that have been popular are the ones of the local churches, the Peace Bridge and the photos of landmarks like the Walls, the jetty at the back of the Guildhall and cityscapes,” said Valerie.

“I just thought they would be a nice way for people to stay in touch at Christmas, and for those who can’t be at home this Christmas at least they have a card from home or a print on the mantlepiece to remind them of the folks back home.

“I can’t believe how popular they have been with people. They just seem to have struck the right chord. I suppose with the new Peace Bridge being opened people here want to send images of it to family members so they can see it too,” she said.
