Somme event at Killead

Joan Christie the HM Lieutenant for County Antrim will officially open the Somme Commemorative Festival which will take place in Killead next month.

The event will be held at Killead Presbyterian Church on July 2, from 11am to 4pm. Admission is free.

There will be a number of exhibitions of the First World War and contemporary material a replica WW1 Trench and Field Hospital, military as well as other period vehicles.

There will also be cakes crafts, sweet cart, ice cream cart, bran tub and games from the era.

The event is being sponsored by the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in conjunction with the Royal British Legion (Crumlin Branch).

In the evening there will be a separate Tea Dance in the style of a century ago.

The following day on Sunday July 3 at 3.30pm there will be a Community Service of Remembrance held in Killead Church.

The speaker will be Rev. Dr Victor Dobbin, CB MBE, (Former Chaplain General to HM Forces UK).
