Soroptimist public speaking

Ballymoney & District branch of Soroptimist International held their heat of the regional public speaking competition.

This year the schools represented were Ballycastle High School and St Mary’s Magherafelt. The judges for the evening were Mrs Mary McMenamin, retired schoolteacher, Mrs Sue Pinkerton, Solicitor and Mrs Frances McCollum, Soroptimist and retired teacher.

The event had been coordinated by Mrs Pat Wright, who introduced the judges and welcomed the girls and their supporters.

There were fours girls who each presented their speech admirably to the members and guests. While the judges retired to make their decision, all enjoyed a welcome supper.

Mrs Sue Pinkerton explained that it was not an easy decision due to the high standard of all the competitors and finally announced the winner to be Aisling Farren from St Mary’s. All the girls were awarded certificates and a small gift. The winner will go forward to the regional final next year.

President Sharon thanked the girls, their teachers and parents for their hard work. Thanks also went to the judges for their decision-making, to Pat Wright for her organisation and to all members who had attended despite such bad weather.
