Soroptimists meetings

A number of events have been planned to celebrate 40 years of St Aengus NS.

It has been a social start to the year for the members of the Soroptimist Club in the north west.

The January meeting of the Soroptimist Club took the form of a delicious meal at the Beech Hill Country House Hotel followed by a talk on the history of Beech Hill by Mark Lusby.

Members found it fascinating to hear of the American camp set up amongst the beech trees and to view the photographs and memorabilia collected by the owner Patsy O’Kane.

The next meeting of the Soroptimist Club members took place in February.

On this occasion the Soroptimist Club members returned to the White Horse Hotel, where they enjoyed a meal, which was followed by a talk given by Dr Maureen Howie. Dr Howie spoke on the role of the lay magistrate.

Members were informed of the rigorous selection procedure which the 4,000 applicants to became a lay magistrate had to embark on.

It was sad to hear of the family miseries which end up in court before a lay magistrate.
