Southern Education and Library Board spent £400k on suspended staff

More money has been spent paying costs of staff suspended on full pay in the SELB than in the other boards combined, according to figures released by the Education Minister.

The statistics were disclosed after a question to the Minister of Education, John O’Dowd, by Strangford MLA, Michelle McIlveen.

They revealed that almost £400,000 had been paid to non-teaching staff in the Southern Education and Library Board between 2010 and 2014.

In the same five year period a total of just £291,000 had been spent by the South-Eastern, Belfast and North-Eastern Boards to staff suspended on full pay.

The five education boards also paid a total of £1,767,481 during the same period towards teaching staff who are or have been suspended on full pay.

The Council For Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) paid a further £1,633,842.

The Southern Education and Library Board were contacted but did not wish to comment on the story.
