Spades at the ready!

Schools and youth groups from Londonderry and Donegal, swapped the indoor classroom for a voyage of woodland discovery at the Woodland Trust’s new Centenary Wood.

Set in the heart of the beautiful Faughan Valley, the recently christened ‘Brackfield Wood’ is one of four flagship woods springing to life across the UK in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

Thanks to support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, 277 children donned welly boots for a woodland agenda brimming with tree planting, nature walks and storytelling.

Michelle McCaughtry, the Woodland Trust’s people engagement co-ordinator, said: “This new Centenary Wood will be a living, lasting tribute to the countless individuals who played a part in, or were affected by, the First World War.

“I’m absolutely delighted that so many schoolchildren have had the chance to get to grips with nature and to make a personal and lasting contribution through the simple act of tree planting.”

The week-long series of events was supported by the Faughan Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme. The Faughan Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme involves a working partnership between RAPID, Derry City Council and the Woodland Trust supported by Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), ‘Landscape Partnerships’. The project vision is to “create a vibrant, natural and cultural diverse landscape within the Faughan Valley that the whole community appreciates, and is engaged with, making it a sustainable landscape for living”.
