Special training for staff at Mountvale

THE staff at Mountvale Private Nursing Home undertook a huge effort recently to raise awareness of a little-known disorder that can cause serious problems for people.

Following the death of resident Jim Beggs from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), the home’s staff said they had an overwhelming desire to do something to help other sufferers.

One staff member said, “We were shocked and inspired at the same time, by the lack of awareness of the condition and the rapid decline that an individual can experience.

“When our resident the late Mr Jim Beggs passed away and the staff reflected on his life and the condition, they had an overwhelming desire to give or do something in return, to this end; a group decided that they wanted to complete a task that challenged them.”

This summer the team climbed Slieve Donard in fancy dress. On the way up and down, they spoke with many other charitable climbers and regular ramblers and raised awareness of PSP. The team raised a staggering 500 for the PSP Association and presented the cheque to Sandra Campbell, Development Officer for PSP Association.
