Newtownabbey Specsavers store director, Tony McGinn, ran the full 26.2 miles of the marathon route, while staff members Samuel Burns, Maggie Crangle, Antoin Rooney, Angela Tormey and Joanne Toner all participated in the relay.

A total of 29 Specsavers staff members from seven different stores across the province ran in this year’s event.

Mr McGinn, Abbeycentre store director, said: “Despite the sore limbs after the event, it is such an exhilarating feeling to know that we have managed to raise £700 for the Children’s Hospice, from our Specsavers store alone. It is such a worthy cause and we are privileged to be part of such a great Specsavers initiative.

“The overall total raised by all of the Specsavers members who participated was over £4,000, with sponsorship money still filtering through. We know that the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice will put the money raised to good use.”

Diane Weston, corporate fundraiser with the Northern Ireland Hospice, thanked the Specsavers team for their marathon effort.

“Knowing that a donation of just £30 could pay for one hour of specialist nursing care for a life-limited child, or, collectively, a donation of £1,380 could pay for a syringe driver to help manage a terminally ill child’s pain, really helped spur runners and walkers on,” she commented.
