Speculation that Saville Report will be published in June

SPECULATION is mounting that the long awaited report into the events of Bloody Sunday will be published on June 16.

The longest inquiry if its type in British legal history began in 1998 and heard evidence from over 900 people.

The Saville Report examined the events surrounding the killings of 13 people by the Parachute Regiment on January 30, 1972. A fourteenth man died later from injuries sustained on the day.

Relatives of those killed have been highly critical of the delays in the publication of the report which finished hearing evidence almost six years ago.

Unionists in Northern Ireland have also criticised the cost of the inquiry, which approached the 200 million mark.

It is understood that an announcement about the publication date is expected shortly, as arrangements are finalised to let the families access the report.

On the morning of the reports publication, the city's Guildhall will be given over to the relatives and their legal teams to study the report before it is handed over to Westminster.

The Saville Inquiry was established to rexamine the events of Bloody Sunday after the widespread discrediting of the initial report into the shootings-The Widgery Report, which was held shortly after the killings in 1972.
