Speed bump call following 11-year-old’s bike accident

“Someone is going to lose a life,” said the Hillcrest resident.

“There’s been three accidents where children have been knocked down in the last six years. I’ve been in contact with the police and the DRD but nothing has been done.

“Are they going to wait until someone is killed?”

The latest accident took place on Monday night. The man said the young lad, whom he understands lives locally, had been knocked off his bike on the Gilpinstown Road while doing an errand to nearby Supervalu. He was taken to hospital though his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The concerned resident said: “The cars fly down the road here. There’s a blind corner so people crossing the road can’t see the cars coming down and the cars can’t see what’s round the corner. It’s supposed to be a 30, but there’s times the cars are hitting 60 and 70.

“We need speed bumps before someone is killed. It’s as simple as that.”

Police confirmed they’d received a report of a one vehicle road traffic collision involved a blue Renault Laguna on the Portadown Road at 8.19pm.

They said an 11-year-old boy, travelling on a bicycle was taken to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening and the trip to the hospital is believed to have been precautionary.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them on 0845 600 8000.

Meawnhile DRD Roads Service spokeswoman said: “The Gilpinstown Road has been assessed for traffic calming measures but returned a lower priority than other sites in the Craigavon Borough Council area.

“Roads Service will be happy to update the assessment as appropriate when details on collisions are received.”
