SPEED FEARS

SPEED FEARS

by PAUL WILKINSON

CONCERN is mounting among residents of Dromore's Barban Hill that someone will be killed or seriously hurt as growing numbers of often speeding drivers use the route to try and avoid Banbridge Road traffic jams.

That's according to Councillor David Herron, who means to raise the issue with the District Policing Partnership when it meets in Dromore in a little over a week's time.

The DUP councillor said this week he had been contacted by a number of residents concerned that it was only a matter of time before there was a accident and someone was hurt.

"Residents have been in touch with me to raise their concerns over the possibility of a serious accident," he said. "There's such a high volume of traffic going that way now, particularly at busy times, such as when the schools are going in and out."

The routine peak time traffic jams at Banbridge Road appear to be driving ever greater numbers of motorists to detour via Barban Hill, whether en route to local schools or bound for the A1 carriageway.

Mr. Herron wants to know if anything can be done to better manage the traffic situation.

"There is a lot of congestion at Banbridge Road," he said, "and I would like the police to look at the area to see of there's anything that can be done,"

In the meantime, he said, he felt a more visible police presence at Barban Hill might in itself be enough to deter speeders and improve the situation.

"It's a 30mph limit," he said, "and residents say there's a lot of excess speed involved; we don't want someone seriously hurt or killed."

Mr. Herron said he would be raising the issue with the DPP when it meets in Dromore on Thursday, November 4, in the bowling pavilion next to the community centre at Lurgan Road.
