Speed limit to be reduced near Spires Integrated Primary School in Magherafelt

Roads Service is planning to introduce new speed limits on the Moneymore Road, Magherafelt near the Spires Integrated Primary School following concerns about speeding traffic.

It is understood the existing 30mph speed limit on Moneymore Road will be extended to include the pedestrian crossing point beyond the entrance to the Sherbourne development.

Additionally, the existing 60mph speed limit between the new extended 30mph limit and the new roundabout junction for the Magherafelt bypass will be reduced to 50mph.

SDLP Patsy McGlone said the SDLP have been lobbying Road Service for the introduction of traffic calming measures in this area for some time.

“The measures are expected to be in place to coincide with the opening of the new roundabout junction for the Magherafelt bypass,” he said.

“It is anticipated that the roundabout will have a positive impact on speed reduction on the route, and that the construction of the bypass will also greatly reduce traffic volumes past the school.

“Roads Service will now start the process of consultation on the changes to the speed limits in these areas...expected to take approximately six to nine months to complete. We look forward to the completion of the process of introducing the new speed limits along this route.”
