Spence on top at Foyle

THE Confined Over-50's competitions drew to a conclusion at Foyle on Friday last with the finals and the last qualifying round for the Senior 'Golfer of the Year' title. John Spence produced his best score of the season, an excellent 42 points, to take top honours.

Full result - 1, John Spence (7) 42 points; 2, Colm Norris (12) 40; 3, Jim McGrotty (18) 39; 4, Willie Boyle (24) 37; non-qualifier, John McDowell (11) 36.

The C.S.S. was 38 pts.

John’s victory moved him from third place to win the race for the Senior “Golfer of the Year” title boasting a four points cushion over the chasing pack. The final table reads - 1, John Spence, 123 points; 2, Tony Walker, 119; 3, Matt Donnell, 119; 4, Colm Norris, 116 and 5, Danny McCay, 115.

Wednesday, September 8th - confined stableford - 1, Gary Cassidy (16) 42 points; 2, Gavin Mc Callion (10) 41. The C.S.S. was 38 pts.

Last Saturday’s confined stableford attracted 80 entries with some excellent scores returned. In the end, Shaun Bradley took top honours with an excellent score of 43 points while the round of the day was recorded by scratch player, Damien McKenna, with a 6 under par round (42 pts.) to take second place.

Damien had an eagle at the par 5 second followed with a bogey at the par four 4th to reach the turn in one under par. He covered the back nine in five under with birdies at the 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th - an excellent round. Full results - 1, Shaun Bradley (15) 43 points; 2, break of tie, Damien Mc Kenna (scr.), 42; 3, Damien Glen (18) 42.

The C.S.S. was 38 pts.

Meanwhile, the Texaco Filling Station (Bridgend) sponsored Singles & Pairs Match Play Championships are now reaching a conclusion with the finals of both competition to be completed by this Sunday, September 19th.

Richard McRory reached the final of the Singles by virtue of his fine victory over Peter Tinney in the semi-final and he awaits the winner from the other semi-final which is between Cormac McGeady and Paul McEleney

The Pairs Match Play semi-finals produced some fine golf with past winners of the competition, Brendan Barr and Martin Loughrey, reaching the final following their victory over Seamus McCarron and John Fleming. The other finalists Father are the father and son pairing of Seamus and James Logue who defeated Gavin McDonnell and Damien Kivelehan.

Juvenile Prizegiving at Prehen

City of Derry’s prizegiving ceremony for juveniles will take place this Saturday, September 18th.

The event will be staged in the Council Room at 7.00 p.m. and all juveniles must attend as the club Captain and President will be in attendance.

The following presentations will be made - President’s Prize, Captain’s Prize, Golfer of the Year, Frankie Campbell Matchplay Trophy and The Professional’s Prize.
