Spent time in custody

Arrested for a drugs offence a 39-year-old man spent time in custody because he had no address to go to, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Wednesday.

Ricardo Valentim Silva, whose address was given as Thomas Street, Portadown, was given a conditional discharge for possession of cannabis on January 19 this year.

The court heard that Silva was taken by police to Lurgan station after an incident in Woodside Green, Portadown.

A search of the defendant uncovered cannabis in his hat.

He said it was for his own personal use and was valued at £5.

Mr Richard Monteith, representing the defendant, said that his client had spent time in custody because he could not get an address.

He explained that Silva had turned up at the police station to make a complaint.

The defendant had now an address in Thomas Street.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said he would take into account that Silva had spent time in custody when sentencing him.
