Sport was badly affected in the area as men went off to war

The WW1 project, organised by the Ulster Scots Resource Centre and the Coleraine Twelfth Festival will not on only honour the local heroes that took part, but it aims to look at how the war affected locals.

Project coordinator Joanne Hunniford says that her research has brought up some interesting details.

“A report in a local newspaper reports on the impact of the war on local football. It tells how teams like Coleraine Alexandra and Coleraine Olympic were unable to field teams due to players being at war. Bann Rowing Club is also mentioned, as members of the Club fought and died in World War One. This project has so much scope, and that’s why we want to get as many groups involved as possible.

On Saturday, November 21 the groups involved will be hosting an open day in the Ulster Scots Resource Centre. ‘WW1 in your attic’ encourages locals to have a hoak in their lofts to see what possible artefacts they may find.

Anyone interested should come along and bring along any items that they might have.
