Sporting spectacular just one year away

The 2013 World Police and Fire Games, set to be the biggest sporting event ever held here, is just one year away.

Held every two years, the Games bring together law enforcement and fire service personnel from across the globe. The 2013 Games will run from 1-10 August in Belfast.

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said: “With only 365 days to go until the 2013 Games begin, we are entering an exciting time for the host city Belfast and the north.”

The Minister was at the NI Fire and Rescue Training Centre to mark the occasion.

She said: “There is a now a real sense of anticipation building around the Games. We have recently seen a number of momentous occasions which have showcased these shores on the world stage.

“The all-Ireland Olympic Torch Relay, the Titanic Centenary and the Irish Open Golf have demonstrated our ability to host major events and create memorable occasions. Next year promises to be just as exciting with Derry hosting the City of Culture celebrations and the all-Ireland Fleadh. I have no doubt next year’s World Police and Fire Games will also be a landmark event which will once again demonstrate all that this part of Ireland has to offer.

“The benefits the Games will bring should not be underestimated. 10,000 competitors will arrive here next year over the 10 days of the Games, bringing with them an additional 15,000 visitors. It will hopefully create a £20million boost for the local economy.
