Spreading their message

AFTER a very successful few months, Abernethy Butter, from Dromara, appeared on prime time UTV show The Magazine on Sunday, 14 April.

The Magazine is a series of Sunday evening programmes, which sees presenter Sarah Travers visit various locations across Northern Ireland in a bid to bring interesting, entertaining and quirky stories to the viewers.

In the second programme of the series, Sarah visited Will and Allison Abernethy who churn butter by hand every day on their farm in Dromara. They also use the butter to produce their home made butter fudge.

The couple showed Sarah how they make and package the butter and finished with the all-important taste test.

The husband and wife team started their business as a hobby in 2005 and it has now grown to become a full time career.

Their television appearance comes after a fantastic few months for the company.

In January this year, they began to supply their butter to Heston Blumenthal’s world famous restaurant, The Fat Duck.

February saw Abernethy Butter hit the shelves of top London food store, Fortum and Mason and later that month, top chef Marcus Wareing began to serve Abernethy Butter at his Michelin starred restaurant at The Berkeley in Knightsbridge, London.

The business has also continued to grow on a local level and they now supply over 60 shops across Northern Ireland. Their butter has also been added to the menu of a number of top Northern Ireland restaurants including Balloo House, The Parson’s Nose and James Street South.

They also achieved two gold stars at the Great Taste Awards in 2012 and won a bronze award in the dairy category at the Royal Highland Show 2012.

The couple hope to expand their business further in the coming months and hope to add to the list of top shops and restaurants that they supply within Northern Ireland, mainland UK and into the Republic of Ireland.

The couple commented: “It has been a great year for us so far in 2013 and we are thankful to all our customers and supporters.

“Appearing on The Magazine was a lot of fun and it is great that we could spread the word about our products to even more people across Northern Ireland.

“We are looking forward to continuing to grow our business in the next few months.”
