Spurs poet is bringing Lilywhite legends home

Part-time poet and Spurs fanatic, Davie Elder, will combine two loves when he brings three bona fide football legends to his beloved Bready Cricket Club this November.

Mark Falco, Tony Galvin and Paul Miller, all of whom played a pivotal role in winning the UEFA Cup for Tottenham Hotspur on an electric night at White Hart Lane in 1984, will be in Magheramason on Friday, November 13.

Davie practically used to hop over his garden fence as a youngster in order to get onto the Bready cricket field.

And since moving up the country for work he’s been organising Tottenham legends nights in Ireland, north and south.

“I’ve been a Spurs fan all my life,” said Davie. “When I moved away, I joined the Lisburn Spurs supporters club and started getting involved organising legends nights.”

Although Tottenham haven’t been the most successful English football club of recent decades there’s still a large support in the Londonderry area, no doubt thanks to fans from the days of Blanchflower, Greaves, Villa and Ardiles dutifully indoctrinating their weans over the years.

“There’s a big fanbase in the North West,” says Davie. “So the night in November will be an opportunity for Spurs fans to come out and meet some of the big players from the 70s and 80s.”

The former Foyle Wanderer will be bringing it all back home with the three legendary UEFA Cup and FA Cup winners in just over a month’s time.

With the possible exception of the Gazza, Lineker and Mabutt generation Falco, Galvin and Miller were members of the last truly successful Spurs side.

Davie says it will be a chance to think back on a magical night for Spurs when over 46,000 packed the terraces at White Hart Lane to watch Ossie Ardiles and co. claim the UEFA Cup for the second time in the club’s history.

“The thing about that generation of players is that they went to the local pub with the fans after winning the UEFA Cup.

“Can you imagine that happening with one of the Premier League players today? This will be a night of banter and crack and any local Spurs fans should come out. It should be a great night.”

The Spurs legends night will be hosted by Richard ‘Crackers’ Cracknell.

Light supper will be available on the night and there will also be a prize raffle.

Tickets cost £25. Doors 7.45pm.
