The Year 7 team from St. Colmcille’s Primary had qualified for the UK finals of the ‘Formula One in Schools’ competition earlier this year.

As Northern Ireland’s champions, they travelled to Birmingham to compete against 18 prarmi, secondary and grammar schools from England, Scotland and Wales.

The competition required the pupils to design and make a model F1 car for racing. In Birmingham, the team overcame any nerves to make a top class presentation on their project to a panel of judges.

They also had to discuss their CAD (computer aided design) drawings with a team of engineering experts and explain their understanding of the manufacturing process.

Thanks to a great team effort, the local pupils won the judges’ discretionary award and were placed second overall in the UK.

The judges commended the children on their knowledge and understanding of the science of the car, the high quality of their research and how they integrated the STEM subjects in their project.
