St Columb’s Cathedral marks National Heritage Week

A SERIES of free events are being staged at St Columb’s Cathedral this week to mark National Heritage Week.

Uniforms and dresses from the 1780s, horses and firing cannon, the Dean playing on the Cathedral organ and free entry to see the Cathedral’s treasures, courtesy of the City Walls Heritage Project were just some of the events on offer so far, but there is much ore on offer during the rest of this week.

There is an extensive exhibition at the moment on the life and poetry of Cecil Frances Alexander and on her husband, Bishop William Alexander, who was Bishop of Derry and Raphoe from 1867 to1896). This takes place in Cathedral House at St Columb’s Court. The ‘CFA Experience’ is open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, from 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4pm.

In addition to the ongoing exhibition, which includes copies of the CD ‘All Things Bright And Beautiful’, of CFA hymns recorded by the Cathedral Choirs for sale, the Cathedral is also open for research bookings and visitors and booked tours will have an opportunity to enjoy the ‘CFA Experience’.

Tomorrow, Thursday, there will be an organ recital at lunch time, which will showcase the tradition of music in the Cathedral. This will be the last in the Summer Series of recitals, but the Dean of Derry, Very Rev Dr William Morton will be presiding at the organ and talking about the history of organ music and the Cathedral’s organs at various times during the remainder of the week, including Saturday.
