St Columb’s Park archaeological plans

PLANS are in train to investigate the medieval landscape of St Columb’s Park in 2012 and 2013.

Irish Archaeological Research (IAR) approached officers from Derry City Council’s Heritage and Museum Service, Economic Development and Leisure Services requesting permission to carry out an archaeological research project within the grounds of St Columb’s Park.

Members of the council’s Development Committee were last week advised that provisional approval was granted for the research.

According to Council documents: “They propose to investigate the medieval landscape of this area by conducting an archaeological survey. The project would consist of topographical, geophysical, and environmental surveys followed by an excavation.

“The excavations will be staffed by experienced archaeologists and excavated according to highest professional standards.”
