Year 11 students from the school were given a brief to design a poster and slogan which would capture the importance of wearing a seatbelt on buses.

Eight finalists were selected and the winner and runner up were selected by a judging panel from Translink, including designers and safety personnel.

Christina McCambridge’s submission, ‘When will it click? Seatbelts save lives’ was the overall winner, while runner-up Hannah Craig used the image of a rib cage made out of seat belts on her poster, with the slogan ‘Stay Safe’.

The posters will be displayed on buses behind drivers and in bus stations in the Larne, Ballymena and Antrim Coast and Glens areas from the end of May. The winner was also given an art portfolio to assist her future studies.

Padraig McIlwaine, viceprincipal at St Killians, said: “This was a great initiative and really got the pupils thinking about the importance of taking responsibility for their own safety while travelling to and from school.

“We’ve run several projects with Translink over recent years, including a bus incident reconstruction, to highlight the importance of wearing seatbelts where provided while travelling on school buses.

Arthur Hamilton, Ulsterbus area manager said: “We were really impressed by the creativity of the pupils and their unique interpretation of the seatbelt safety message.”
