St Patrick's Day parade back on track this year

SAINT Patrick's Day parade organisers in Lurgan hope to get back on track with this year's event.

Last year’s celebrations were significantly reduced in light on the heightened dissident threat following the murder of police constable Stephen Carroll in Craigavon.

More recently the organising committee made an appeal in the ‘MAIL’ for marching bands to lead the parade and their calls have been answered by two bands from Portadown.

Ten youth groups have also been lined up to brighten the day with their colourful costumes and floats.

The parade will begin from St Peter’s new hall in North Street and move along Lake Street, Victoria Street, William Street, Charles Street through to Silverwood Drive and onto Francis Street, along Edward Street onto Church Place and finish back at St Peter’s.

After the parade there will be further fun in the hall including an underage football tournament, Irish dancing, stew and refreshments.

Organiser Laurence O’Connor told the ‘MAIL’: “We just want to get things back on track. It wouldn’t have been the same without the bands. If more bands want to join us it’s not too late.”

Any marching bands wishing to take part in the St Patrick’s Day parade should contact Laurence on 0777 588 3676.
