Staff celebration at Mossley Mill

A CEREMONY of Recognition was held at Mossley Mill recently to acknowledge the achievements of council staff.

The ceremony was an opportunity for the council to highlight the many achievements made by staff over the past year, and to show appreciation to staff members who have 25 years service, and retiring staff.

Staff from departments across the council who completed qualifications throughout the year were also recognised at the event.

One of the retirees, the Chief Executive, Norman Dunn said: “We are continually working to improve our services for customers, and key to that is having motivated and skilled staff. The range of qualifications achieved by our staff demonstrates the emphasis we place on staff development.”

This year was the first time GEM awards were presented to staff.

These ‘Going the Extra Mile’ awards recognise staff who work in frontline services and behind the scenes to make sure customers experience the very best service from the council.

A Special Recognition GEM Award was presented by the Corporate Management Team to Arlene Beattie who, with her Valley Leisure Centre colleagues Mark McKnight, and Lee Irvine, helped save a gym member’s life recently.

When he collapsed and suffered a major heart attack which led to a cardiac arrest it was the trio’s quick thinking and CPR skills that kept the man alive.

The medical team at the Mater Hospital commented that the CPR which had been administered was excellent, and helped to save his life. As a result the gym member is now making a fantastic recovery.

The Cemetery Team won the GEM ‘Behind the Scenes’ award.

The team led by Kenny McFaul show amazing sensitivity and tactfulness in their work. Its members have received many compliments for the kind and thoughtful way in which they handle very emotional and difficult situations.

Another member of the Parks’ Team, David Alister, was also recognised for his willingness to offer his time, energy and know-how in the development of the parks’ staff.

David has prepared, trained and assessed almost all the staff in this section and has helped them gain NVQs in horticulture, sports turf and spraying.

The final GEM award of the evening went to The Theatre of the Mill Team.

The nomination covered everyone who was involved in the lead up to and the actual opening of the borough’s newest facility.

Commenting on the award the Mayor, Alderman John Scott said: “This is an excellent example of cross-departmental working where everyone was working towards the same goal, the opening of the theatre.

“It was not an easy challenge but the drive, enthusiasm and downright determination of everyone have been key factors in the initial success.”
