Stars line up to support Marie Curie Cancer Care

AN assortment of well known faces are supporting to Marie Curie Cancer Care's Great Daffodil Appeal this year by encouraging North West residents to turn their time into nursing care for terminally ill people by volunteering to collect for the charity during February and March.

Stephen Fry, Tony Blackburn, Lynda Bellingham, Jon Culshaw, Stephen Mangan, and Sir Ranulph Fiennes are among the stars who feature in a short video ‘The video can be viewed at http://www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil/ ‘), made by Marie Curie Cancer Care to help recruit 20,000 volunteer collectors in UK, 150 of those are required for the North West for it’s 2010 Great Daffodil Appeal.

Each March the charity encourages everyone in the UK to give a donation in return for a daffodil to wear in support of Marie Curie Nurses. All money raised will help Marie Curie Cancer Care provide free nursing care for people with cancer and other terminal illnesses in their own homes and the charity’s hospices.

Marie Curie Cancer Care’s services are free to patients, their families and carers, but the charity can only provide these with your support.

Patricia McDowell, Area Nurse Manager for the local area said, “Most people would want to be cared for at home if they were terminally ill. Marie Curie Nurses like me working in Derry allow people this choice because we provide end of life care, totally free to patients in their own homes.

“I’ll be out collecting this March to ensure more people get to die peacefully at home surrounded by their family whilst receiving the very best care. After all, everyone should have that choice.”

Marie Curie Cancer Care urgently needs to recruit 20,000 volunteer collectors to help its Great Daffodil Appeal in 2010. The charity is asking for volunteer collectors to give an hour of their time during the Great Daffodil Appeal this February and March to help someone in their final hours.

If you have more time available, there are other ways to get involved. For example, the charity needs help organising the collections, or you could volunteer at your local fundraising office or distributing daffodil boxes to local supporters.
