Stay Healthy, Safe and Comfortable this Winter – Beggs

UUP MLA Roy Beggs and Age NI are advocating simple steps to help older people in East Antrim stay healthy, safe and comfortable this Winter.

Mr Beggs MLA commented: “January has been cold and wintry in Northern Ireland. Unfortunately, weather forecasters are expecting more freezing days ahead but there are a number of simple steps you can take to mitigate against the cold snap.

“Heat your home well. Rising fuel costs are a worry, but not heating our homes properly puts us at risk of illness, such as pneumonia. Keep your home warm and your bills as low as possible by setting your heating to 18-21 Degrees.

“Get financial support. There are grants, benefits and sources of advice available to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating or help with bills. Call the Age NI Advice Service for a free benefits check on Freephone 0808 808 7575.

“Eat well. Food is a vital source of energy, which helps keep your body warm. Make sure that you have hot meals and drinks regularly throughout the day.

“Get a flu jab. You can get a free jab from your GP to protect against seasonal flu if you are over 65.

“Look after yourself. On extremely cold days try to avoid going outside. Wrap up warm if you do need to.”
