Step back in time at Limestone Way

Whitemountain & District Community Association will host a ‘Visit The Limestone Way’ event on Saturday, August 10.

The focus will be on a guided geological tour and environmental awareness of Belshaw’s Quarry National Nature Reserve which is a key nationally recognised feature in the area and somewhat unique in Europe.

The Limestone Way was launched recently by Alderman William Leatham and is Lisburn’s newest feature on their guide of attractions and the event on August 10 is aimed to be a catalyst for future summer events in the area.

At the launch, John Belshaw the secretary of the association commented: “We will start things off at noon and everyone in the family is welcome to attend our Visit The Limestone Way event.

“The environmental awareness introduction is especially for all the family and the younger ones taking part will be given certificates with a ‘Find Dino the Dinosaur’ challenge to help them on their way.

“We are very fortunate to have two experienced geologists give the tour and visitors will hopefully be surprised at the amount of visible geological features that this compact location has.

“An associated guide style flyer that we have created has been circulated to residents and local businesses and to wider audience by Lisburn Tourist Information Centres.

“Other features nearby also give an insight into the effects of geological events nearly 250 million years back and how man worked the various materials to create modern day uses from millions of years old rock.

“The event will last approximately two hours in total and will end off with some light refreshments at The Little Green Allotments on Whitemountain Road. The younger folks can also get up close to some farmyard birds while the grown ups can see how to grow your own fruit, flowers and vegetables.”

There is no need to register for this free event and visitors should wear appropriate footwear and bring a coat.
