Step up and dance!

IT’S BACK - bigger, brighter and better than ever before!

The Rio Salsa dance group is organising “Step Up and Dance” in the Lodge Hotel on March 16th and 17th.

Rio Salsa is a non-profit making organisation, formed by a group of local people who enjoy dancing, and in recent years they have organised a number of charity fundraisers.

“Following recent coverage of the rapidly escalating levels of depression and suicide in our society, we have decided to run an event in aid of two charities who are doing valuable work in this area - the Community Rescue Service and AWARE Defeat Depression,” said Linda Steele, one of the organisers.

“Northern Ireland statistics show that last year more people took their own lives than died on our roads.

“Those most in need of help and support often do not know where to find it.

“It is our intention that this event should not only raise much-needed funds but also heighten awareness of this problem and the range of support groups in the area which are available to help individuals and their families.

“We plan to hold the “Step Up and Dance” event on 16th and 17th March in the Lodge with over 50 participants from a range of sports and community organisations.

“The groups will perform in front of 400 people each night to promote the message that we can help to maintain good mental health through good physical health and teamwork.

“Alongside the door takings we have set ourselves a target of securing £500 sponsorship per team.”

The teams taking part in the movie-themed dance competition are:

Castlerock Golf Club, the ‘Not So Young’ Young Farmers, University of Ulster administration team, U3A, Bann Wheelers, Portrush Yacht Club, the Limavady Line Dancers, Coleraine Rugby and Hockey Clubs and an exciting new addition to be announced at a later date.

Rio Salsa are seeking sponsors who would be willing to help fund the event. Anyone who can assist is asked to contact Frances on 07789 363043.

The Coleraine Times will be profiling the dancing teams in the weeks to come so watch this space...
