Sally Sarah Josephine Connors, Monbrief Walk, Lurgan, had admitted the theft at an earlier court sitting. The case had been adjourned for a pre-sentence report.

The court heard that on August 9 this year the injured party reported to police he had a credit union book with £40 in it stolen from his back pocket while he was in Lurgan library. CCTV showed the defendant lifting the item from his pocket.

When interviewed by police Connors made a full admission and co-operated with them. She handed back £10. She had a relevant record.

A solicitor representing the defendant said that she had £30 with her in court.

District Judge, Mrs Bernie Kelly, said Connors had a ‘horrendous record’ and there was only one penalty she could impose for what was ‘quite a mean offence’.

She sentenced the defendant to four months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered her to pay compensation.
