Stole sandwiches and can of cola

A 27 year old man who stole sandwiches and a can of coke from a Lurgan store was given a suspended prison sentence last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

Michael Connors, Albert Street, Lurgan, was sentenced to one month in prison, suspended for 12 months, for the theft on January 27 this
year.

He was also fined £75 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard that he took a pack of sandwiches and a can of coke, valued at £3.73, from the Spar store in William Street and left without paying.

On February 3 his mother called at the store and left £5 to pay for the items, saying the rest of the money could go in a charity box.

A barrister for Connors said he had insulin dependent diabetes and he felt an episode coming on so he took the sandwiches and coke.

It was out of need as opposed to greed, added the barrister.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said the last disposal on the defendant’s record for a similar offence had been immediate custody but this was over a year ago.
