Stolen goods found after man's arrest

After he was arrested for a shoplifting offence it was discovered a 50-year-old man had stolen goods in another bag.

Augusto Oliveiro Almeida Figuieredo, Donard Gardens, Lurgan, was given a combination order last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

He admitted the theft of goods valued at £130.87 from TK Maxx on November 23 last year and on the same date handling stolen goods namely underwear and a steam iron.

The defendant was sentenced to a combination order of 12 months probation and 100 hours community service.

The court heard that at 12.05pm Figuieredo was seen on CCTV in TK Maxx.

He placed items in a carrier bag and left the store without paying.

When he was stopped and searched he had another bag which contained two ladies’ bras and an iron.

During interview he admitted going into the shop for a look around and for no reason put the items in a bag.

He admitted buying the bras and iron in a car park and getting them cheaply.

A barrister representing the defendant said he had a bad record but it was for offending of a different nature.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said there had never been any community disposal on the defendant’s record and it was something of a departure for him to get involved in dishonesty.

Imposing the combination order the judge warned Figuieredo that if there was a breach of the order the only option left to the court would be a custodial sentence.
