Stolen property and drugs seized in operation

A PSNI crackdown on burglaries and robberies in Carrick has led to arrests and the recovery of stolen property.

Over a 10-day period police detained 26 individuals suspected of involvement in a number of incidents throughout the District, which also includes Newtownabbey Lisburn and Antrim, in recent months.

A significant quantity of suspected stolen property, items that could be used to commit crime and drugs were also seized.

Of the 26 people arrested, nine were subsequently charged with burglary and robbery as well as a number of other offences and have since appeared before the courts. One other male was reported to the PPS while the remainder are currently on police bail pending further enquiries.

Officers also interviewed two men who attended their local police station voluntarily. In both cases a report was submitted to the PPS.

The officer at the head of the operation, D District’s Crime Manager Detective Chief Inspector Colin Gillis said he was pleased with the results yielded.

He said: “Time after time people tell us that these are the crimes that concern them. The invasion of your home by strangers. The threat of violence while you go about your work or daily routine. We want people to know that we are listening and we are doing something about it. This operation was about targeting those criminals that are targeting the community.

“We are sending out a very clear that message if you commit a crime in this District, do not think that you will get away with it. We will continue to carry out thorough investigations into all reported burglaries and robberies, and detectives are firmly committed to converting all evidence into arrests and charges.

“As Op Zariba demonstrates, commit a crime and you will be pursued and ultimately you will be caught.”
