'Stop now before you kill someone'

A LARNE community representative has condemned the actions of youths who he claimed put people's lives in danger at the weekend.

Bertie Shaw, chairman of Seacourt Community Council, voiced his concern after a group of teenagers gathered on the edge of the estate on Saturday night to launch a barrage of stones and bottles at traffic travelling along the Old Glenarm Road.

Mr Shaw said: "I was contacted by a number of residents who had witnessed a group of about 12 youngsters throwing stones and bottles at moving traffic. Vehicles were having to swerve to avoid being hit, and there could have easily been an accident, with someone seriously hurt or killed as a result.

"This was not just anti-social behaviour that these youngsters were involved in - it posed a real danger to people's lives."

And Mr Shaw has urged parents to take greater control of their children to help prevent incidents like this from happening again.

He added: "This was a very serious incident and I would encourage parents to be aware of what their children are getting up to. I have spoken to some of those involved and warned them of the dangers associated with this kind of behaviour."

Police in Larne confirmed they had received a report of young people throwing stones at vehicles at about 9.25pm. A PSNI spokesman added that enquiries were ongoing and asked witnesses to contact police in the town.
