Store saves tonnes of waste from landfill

Habitat ReStore, the low-cost DIY store in Lisburn, diverted 45 tonnes of material from landfill in the first three months of 2014.

The announcement came on World Environment Day as Habitat ReStore launched ten days of special offers to help local families sustainably improve their
home for less.

Habitat ReStore, which is based at the Riverside Centre in Young Street, sells donated new and used DIY and home improvement materials at 50-75% of the retail price.

During the first quarter of 2014, 45 tonnes of material were diverted from landfill, including 20.41 tonnes of wood and 9.22 tonnes of steel.

Habitat ReStore stocks a wide range of materials including doors, kitchens, bathrooms, lighting, garden equipment, tools and appliances.

To mark World Environment Day, there were ten days of special offers in ReStore, including items such as wardrobes, desks and kitchen sinks from £10 each. There was also a wide range of DIY materials such as plastering render for only £20.

Niall McConkey, ReStore Manager said: “Diverting materials from landfill is integral to creating a sustainable future for everyone in Northern Ireland.
